Book review #1: Incidents Around The House by Josh Malerman

Genre: Horror, Fiction, Thriller, Paranormal
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

A blend of supernatural elements and psychological depth

Characters
No parents are perfect, but they'll do anything to protect their child. The adult characters' reactions to malevolent force is incredibly believable. It really drives home that adults don't know everything; they're like kids constantly learning. Malerman masterfully captures the innocence and curiosity of an 8-year-old.

Atmosphere
This book nails the atmosphere. There's a constant feeling of dread that keeps you on edge, mixed with a desperation for the family to get through their ordeal. The creeping sense that no matter where you hide, Other Mommy will always find you, is particularly chilling.

Writing Style
This was my first Josh Malerman book, so I wasn't sure what to expect from his writing style. I was skeptical about the story being told from an 8-year-old's POV, but it worked surprisingly well.

Enjoyment
The book starts off creepy, mellows down in the middle, but picks up significantly during the revelations towards the end.

Overall, the book is unputdownable. You'll be eager to get to the bottom of what's happening to the family. Is it a demonic spirit, or just Bela's imagination running wild?

While the ending might leave you with more questions than answers, it's a testament to Malerman's skill that even ambiguity feels satisfying.

Highly recommend it if you are in the mood for something that will make you question every creak and groan in your own house!
