I remember that there was a lawyer who used ChatGPT to write the deposition for a case. It turns out the ai just makes up case numbers to reference.

Honestly, I don't see how using AI can be a terrible thing - as long as you put down your own understanding of the subject matter rather than simply copying the text word for word.
Children in middle school might get away with literally copying paragraphs out of books - because the aim is more to get them used to doing written homework... but, by the time that you reach high school, they are looking more for your understanding and interpretation and they will want to see more of how you get to your conclusion rather than a simple statement of said conclusion.
