Why? Why are Roald Dahl's books being rewritten??

I'm a woke lib, I admit it, πŸ‘¨β€β€οΈβ€πŸ‘¨πŸ‘©β€β€οΈβ€πŸ‘©πŸŒ but this is going too far. Roald Dahl's beloved books are now being rewritten in places to remove remove language deemed offensive by the publisher, Puffin.

They have apparently hired "sensitivity readers" to rewrite chunks of the author’s text to make sure the books β€œcan continue to be enjoyed by all today.”

These "small and carefully considered changes" are nothing of the sort; these changes will extensive across his entire work.

Such as:

The word β€œfat” has been cut from every new edition of relevant books, while the word β€œugly” has also been culled. Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is now described as β€œenormous”. In The Twits, Mrs Twit is no longer β€œugly and beastly” but just β€œbeastly”.

In The Witches, a paragraph explaining that witches are bald beneath their wigs ends with the new line: β€œThere are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.” Oh, and the Witches can also be "top scientists or CEOs of multinational companies" rather than "cashiers in a supermarket" or "typing letters for a businessman"

In previous editions of James and the Giant Peach, the Centipede sings: β€œAunt Sponge was terrifically fat / And tremendously flabby at that,” and, β€œAunt Spiker was thin as a wire / And dry as a bone, only drier.”

Both verses have been removed, and in their place are the rhymes: β€œAunt Sponge was a nasty old brute / And deserved to be squashed by the fruit,” and, β€œAunt Spiker was much of the same / And deserves half of the blame.”

References to β€œfemale” characters have disappeared. Miss Trunchbull in Matilda, once a β€œmost formidable female”, is now a β€œmost formidable woman”.

Gender-neutral terms have been added in places – where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Oompa Loompas were β€œsmall men”, they are now β€œsmall people”. The Cloud-Men in James and the Giant Peach have become Cloud-People.

Oh, and I think worst of all, the tractors in Fantastic Mr Fox are no longer "black, murderous, brutal-looking monsters”. Yup, you guessed it! They are now merely "murderous brutal-looking monsters..."

No wonder Puffin haven't "immediately responded to requests for comment"

Now I know Roald Dahl was far from being an angel - he was anti-Semitic for one - but.. come on!!!

So, I need to ask, was anyone actually offended by any of Dahl's books (from an inclusive perpective), and if so, why? Truly I'd be interested to know!

Yup, it's all fun and games when its something you don't care about personally, but suddenly they come for some art that you like? πŸ€¨πŸ™„

Now its gone to far....

@SumKindaMunster I did say I was a woke liberal, remember?😜 Also, I'm not getting angry about it, or claiming that people who disagree are indoctrinated...

@SW-User Yeah I remember. Not angry about it? Never said you were, but you did post about 9 paragraphs detailing your disagreement with the whole thing. Seems like you are complaining, so I am responding to your complaints and making you aware how this stuff goes down.

Maybe you will care when you yourself are silenced or have your words altered and removed because someone took offense.

@SumKindaMunster Well, do you disagree with this?

However, now I think about it more (yes, I can think), in some ways it could simply be seen as a hard-headed business decision by Netflix (who own the Roald Dahl Story Company) to protect their investment. After all, look what happened to Dr Seuss.

Also, as Philip Pulman said, there are lots of other brilliant writers out there, who might get read more if Dahl's titles were allowed to fade away graciously....

@SW-User I don't care. It's unfortunate some feel his works need to be altered like this, but if it truly bothered me, I would get copies of his old works and just refer to those.

Yeah whatever. Nothing wrong with Dahl, if you find his writing dated, there are plenty of contemporary books to pursue, it isn't necessary to impose your personal beliefs and offenses on old art and literature and alter and censor it to make yourself feel better.

Just don't expose yourself to it.

@SumKindaMunster I 100% agree with you. If there is a real problem with a book, let it go out of print, like this extremely unfortunately named book that my parents used to have...😱

@SW-User Yes or Song of the South.
