Tastefully erotic books?

What novels are there that have an atmosphere, or just passages, of eroticism that is a bit subtle, refined, nuanced ? - probably without explicit detail, or at least not deliberately crude/vulgar. Not the kind of stuff that stokes the fevered imaginings of horny virgin youths. I think of H.E. Bates' beautifully written 'The Four Beauties' which breathes contained desire throughout, although sex only occurs in the last last story, and then only by inference - never actually described.

"L'histoire d'O" by Pauline Réage (published in 1954) is an extremely tasteful book about dominance and submission; I enjoyed reading it very much.

@helenS I believe I saw 'The Story of O' movie, or at least part of it, in English, 30+ years ago. Not sure what I thought of it so either it didn't stir me much or I've just forgotten. I may try looking for the book but not en Français.

Haha; my spellchecker didn't like that but suggested Franglais !

@Really The book is definitely not everyone's cup of tea/coffee.

@helenS Not everyone's taste, I'm sure - and probably not as subtle or nuanced as I'd prefer - although I'm quite flexible about that if the writing's good 😊.

@helenS years ago I read Anne Rice's East of Eden which covers the same ground. Very erotic

@JohnnyNoir Haven't heard of that book before. Thank you – it's on my list now! 🍷
