Tastefully erotic books?

What novels are there that have an atmosphere, or just passages, of eroticism that is a bit subtle, refined, nuanced ? - probably without explicit detail, or at least not deliberately crude/vulgar. Not the kind of stuff that stokes the fevered imaginings of horny virgin youths. I think of H.E. Bates' beautifully written 'The Four Beauties' which breathes contained desire throughout, although sex only occurs in the last last story, and then only by inference - never actually described.

"L'histoire d'O" by Pauline Réage (published in 1954) is an extremely tasteful book about dominance and submission; I enjoyed reading it very much.

@helenS years ago I read Anne Rice's East of Eden which covers the same ground. Very erotic

The joy of reading is that the most. erotic of passages occur in the most unexpected of sources .

I have made a few attempts at writing some tastefully erotic short stories based on true events. You may enjoy two of my posts. An Unusual Summer Job. And Naked As A Jaybird. 😊 Birdie

The Three Musketeers. The scenes between Milady and Felton, which go no further physically than her baring her shoulder and him kissing her hands, are probably the reason erotic submission remains my biggest turn-on, half a century after reading the book for the first time.

I can only think of Mills and Boon
