A MUST READ: Maverick: A Biography of Thomas Sowell

92 years old, "Sowell modestly says he’s not tough, but anyone who knows anything about the man knows that this simply isn’t true. No one could’ve grown up an orphaned black boy and a high school dropout in the Jim Crow South and put together such a stunning body of intellectual work, no one could’ve endured such a long lifetime of slings and arrows from the Left, without being tough as nails."

"Remarkably, Sowell was a Marxist in his 20s and early 30s. His awakening, as historian John Steel Gordon writes, came when he saw how the U.S. government’s minimum wage laws affected the workforce at a sugar plantation in Puerto Rico: As wages went up, the number of workers went down. Thus, a well-intended law was actually a net detriment to those it was intended to help. Imagine that."

There were lots of Marxists in the 20s and 30s of the previous century.

The more intelligent ones came to understand Marxism for the nonsense that it was.

The rest remained useful idiots.

@Thinkerbell Interesting, though. This man grew up in the Jim Crow south, and WAS a Marxist, and did a 180. Today he is recognized as one of the leading intellectuals of our time...but he is a common sense sort of genius...(the only kind I respect).

@Thinkerbell Clarence Thomas had a similar metamorphisis. He was liberal until he got to Yale and was disgusted over how patronizing the libs were to him

@Slade I was disgusted by the way the Democrat Congress treated him. Horrible.

@4meAndyou Bidet and his effluvia led the way

We got liberals here calling him Uncle Thomas AND THEN calling you a racist right after
4meAndyou · F
@Slade Ted Kennedy and Joe Biden tag teamed him.

@4meAndyou yeah Ted was trying to call him immoral. I happened to be on Martha's Vinyard (near Ted's elusive bridge) during all that.

Conversations in the barrooms were pure priceless🤣
