I love thinking about etymology. It's always fun with Slavic words. You change a suffix and suddenly it sounds really funny. xD

@CrazyMusicLover can you give me an example?
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@sumojumo Well, it's usually like that with Polish. I find Polish hilarious. xD Like the word kurzcak. We call it kurča, not really different but for some reason, kurzcak sounds really funny to us. Or Śmietanka...it sounds like diminutive because of -ka.

It's hard to explain it with suffixes but it must be similar in other languages. Not always funny but it makes you realize that we could use other suffix and the meaning would be the same but it just sounds weird to us because we are used to another word for it.. When you switch collector and the postman (collectman, poster)

Or I like words that came from a metaphor, for example "to frown" would normally mean "to be cloudy" here.

@CrazyMusicLover Where are you from? Because we find the Czech language hilarous. everything is a dimininutive :) And also we have mixed some words, the same words, completely different meaning in Croatian :)
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@sumojumo Slovakia. We find Czech cool in some ways so we actually use Czech words or phrases to sound more cool or more expressive. I never noticed that Czech words could sound like diminutive.
Yeah, meanings of words in different Slavic languages can be tricky. It was only recently that I learned that krasny means red in Russian.
sumojumo · 36-40, M
@CrazyMusicLover That is great, so basically for 99% of the world, we are from the same country ;). And also our languages are similar, so I understand you most of the time.

And yes, I was surprized too, when I learned that krasny is red. I think I learned that from the Czech movie Kolya. In our language it also means wonderful.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@sumojumo Wonderful? Another surprise. :O It means beautiful here.
sumojumo · 36-40, M
krasno might also mean beautiful, but brace yourself ;), najlepši mean the most beautiful, and I think in Slovak is "the best"? And I believe there are tons of these lying around :)
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@sumojumo 😱 Yes, it means the best. That's so strange for me! 😅
What about užasny? xD It means wonderful here.
sumojumo · 36-40, M
Omg, someone is messing up with us. In Croatian užasno means horrible. This looks like someone shuffled the meaning of words and is now rolling on the floor when two Slavic people meet and try to make sense of words... This could be a nice David Lynch series ;).
