The book was really well written, with vivid likeable characters, that it proceeded to then do horrible things to and kill.
Kinda like reading a Stephen King horror, but without even a happy ending.
Did I like it? ... it doesn't really seem to want to be liked, but I dont regret reading it (or watching the excellent miniseries)

@firefall I was in Texas some years back and went to McMurty's bookstore.
There was a note from him posted on the wall. I no longer remember the exact wording, but the gist was that no signed books of his were sold in his store. 'If you require the talisman of a signature, there are signed books available at....(some store across town, owned by a friend of his).
It was a grumpy note and made me like him.
As for killing off all the characters he made us love-
He does say in the book 'life is cheap up here along the Canadian'
The message I've taken from more than one of his books is -life, you can live it or you can make it last.

@Mamapolo2016 Fair enough, and he's not wrong, but for fiction, I like happy endings. Enough unhappy endings in my life already

I understand. And it's worse with writers who make you believe their characters are flesh and blood.

I loved the book and read it a couple of times. The TV series was excellent, especially with the cast. I understand that McMurtry wrote the part of Gus with Robert Duvall in mind, and he played the role well.

@exexec Robert Duvall may be my favorite actor.

Yes I read the whole "Lonesome Dove" series. I thought the TV series did a good job with the book.
