Fiction when I need an escape from reality. Non-fiction when I'm feeling hungry for knowledge.

@majestueuse What's the best fiction story you've read recently? What kind of things do you like to learn about through non-fiction?
Angelfire21 · 36-40, F
Absolutely both! My favorite genre is Historical Fiction, which tends to have a little of both. I really loved the Boudica novels which are fiction based on non-fiction (history).
But more importantly, I think a person should read a little of everything. At first, I had clear ideas about what types of novels I enjoyed and then a friend of my moms gave me a huge box of books. It was a good mix of things I was sure I would hate and there were some lemons in there, but I read every scrap of text in that box and, since then, have been more open minded about literature.
It almost doesn't matter what you're reading, as long as you're reading.

@Angelfire21 Definitely! Not making any promises it'll happen as I'm not particularly good at online stuff, but as you've been the inspiration here I'll certainly not leave you out!

@Angelfire21 Looked into the online book group idea, and seems like good reads would be your best bet! I'm not on it myself, but it looks like a good platform for it and a good place to find fellow readers. I think I'm going to hold out until I see if a startup in my local community comes to anything, but let me know if you decide to try good reads!

@xxxxxx Agreed! And there's something to be said for the emotional and existential value of a little bit of fantasy, now and again.

I read more fiction than non-fiction (partly because I read a lot of news articles and magazines so I get a dose of non-fiction regularly). But I enjoy them both.

@SW-User Wired is a tech magazine, I'm guessing? I'm not very magazine savvy, unfortunately.

SW-User
@SW-User Yes it is :) It's pretty interesting. I never used to read many magazines until these past couple years.

SW-User
@SW-User Any particular reason you started?

Fiction for me since I use reading as an escape ^-^

@SW-User It's set in 14th century England in a fictious town called Kingsbridge. A group of children, all belonging to different classes witness a killing. They grow up but their classes and the killings still affect their life.

SW-User
@Azrael Oh! That sounds really cool! Thanks for sharing!

Nonfiction. I do not like to read stories that are made up by somebody that give me no knowledge or benefits to the real world

SW-User
@SW-User I prefer nonfiction as well, but I think fiction can, if done well, have some epistemic benefits.

SW-User
@SW-User I agree entirely

I do enjoy both. On a day to day basis I read more nonfiction, such as news articles, factual info, policies (relevant to my place of work), even banal things like recipes and instructions. I think we can all agree that's fairly essential to everyday life, but it's an essential that I enjoy - particularly when expanding my knowledge in an area that interests me.
But fiction is something I truly love. I believe someone's imaginations, mixed with their perspective of the world and the thought processes they narrate, gives a valuable insight into many different cultures and societies, and gives me a better understanding and empathy with those around me.
Not to mention the sheer beauty of wordcraft 😍

they're two great tastes that go together, actually.

@sighmeupforthat What's the last good book you've read, from each?

I like both.
