My husband accepts "It is what it is."
When his parents ask us to visit, we usually bring food and drinks with us. When they come over to our place, they don’t usually bring anything and tend to expect to be served, which I understand. It’s just something I’ve noticed.
Sometimes when they help by picking the girls up from school because we’re running late, the girls haven’t eaten, so we bring food when we arrive and they eat too.
It’s similar when they ask my husband for help with things. For example, last week he spent about an hour mowing their lawn. I don’t expect anything in return, but it would be nice if there was a bit of thought or something small offered. Just as a simple courtesy.
After that, they asked if he wanted to buy dinner. He asked me what I felt like doing. I said we’d just head home. Driving another 20 minutes to get food and 20 minutes back felt exhausting so we ended up going home and cooking for ourselves instead.
My husband doesn't speak up. He just says to me "it is what it is." He has no backbone in my opinion.
