What's with fathers-in-law?

I'm closer to my father-in-law than the MIL and I prefer to keep distance from her. At our wedding my father-in-law asked me to call him "Dad," but I can't call him that while I call the MIL by her first name. My brother-in-law's ex-wife preferred to call them both by their first names so I chose to do the same.
