Former President Trump warned Monday that any American who votes “illegally” will be thrown in jail.

Trump went after the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) in a Truth Social post on Monday, suggesting that Democrats will use the law to “cheat.” Service members are able to vote while serving overseas through an absentee ballot under the federal law.


“The Democrats are talking about how they’re working so hard to get millions of votes from Americans living overseas. Actually, they are getting ready to CHEAT! They are going to use UOCAVA to get ballots, a program that emails ballots overseas without any citizenship check or verification of identity, whatsoever. (Foreign interference?) Remember they say, we have the ‘most secure elections in history,’ and anyone can get a ballot emailed to them!” he wrote in a Truth Social post.

“They want to dilute the TRUE vote of our beautiful military and their families, who Comrade Kamala has totally disrespected and abandoned. Republicans must act to stop them from stealing our military votes. WATCH! Remember, IF YOU VOTE ILLEGALLY, YOU’RE GOING TO JAIL,” he continued.

According to the Federal Voting Assistance Program, military service members and their families can apply for an absentee ballot online. Anyone voting using an absentee ballot overseas must meet the qualifications laid out by UOCAVA.

The military members and their families can send their completed ballot back ahead of the election. Each state has its own deadlines and rules for absentee voting.

Trump has repeatedly pushed false claims about potential voter fraud in the 2020 election despite there being no evidence of widespread voter fraud. In 2020, military members and their families voiced concerns that they were a part of Trump’s unsupported claim that there was voter fraud, The Associated Press reported at the time.

Early in-person voting is now underway in several states ahead of November’s election.

As the start of early voting approached,Trump’s rhetoric turned more ominous with a pledge to prosecute anyone who “cheats” in the election in the same way he falsely claimed they did in 2020, when he lied about widespread fraud and attacked officials who stood by their accurate vote tallies.

Trump has previously sought to sow doubts about mail voting and encouraged voters to cast ballots in person on Election Day. But this year,Trump and the Republican National Committee, which he now controls, have begun to embrace early and mail voting as a way to lock in GOP votes before Election Day, just as Democrats have done for years.
