I am going to lie low for a bit.

A couple of days ago my brother couldn't breathe properly. Thankfully my parents were with him so they took him to the hospital to get him checked up. He has arrhythmia - irregular heartbeat. A number of factors caused this.

Now he has to have an ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator), a device placed in the chest. He is currently confined as he is having a number of tests done. Yesterday he was on a treadmill and they concluded that his veins and arteries have no blockages so blood is still flowing freely, thankfully.

Today my mum and my brother's fianceé are on the way to the hospital to ask the doctors if it is really necessary to put in an ICD. I'm hoping it's not, but I read that it is for precaution just in case something happens again, so my sister and I are telling them that he should go through with the procedure. The whole family knows he needs one eventhough he doesn't want one. He is a bit hard-headed. I hope he knows it's for his own good.

I have been crying since last night since I've heard about this. I don't like the thought of any operation/surgery. And being far away from my family makes me so frustrated. If any of you has an ICD or know anyone who does please pm me. Thank you for your support in advance.

I tell people who ask to get a second or even third doctor's opinion before almost any surgery. That being said the ICD implantation is not major surgery. It is implanted under the skin through a slit made in the skin usually near the collarbone. It's done under local anesthesia and the patient is awake during the procedure.

I don't know anyone personally that has an ICD, but I know of them and what they do. It's an impressive piece of tech that could very much save his life. I hope he can be convinced to get one.

I hope that you are ok as well. Hugs

I’m sorry your brother is going through this!

I worked with a lady 30 years ago who, at age 35, had to have one implanted. It saved her life. Her biggest complaint afterwards was not being able to lift anything heavy or reach up for things. She didn’t have to take too much time off work from what I recall. She did have to go back sometimes for testing to run on the treadmill. She’s still doing really well.

I'm so sorry my friend. I do have a very good friend that has one and she is doing well. It just gives the heart a little kick to get the rhythm going again. It will be ok. 🤗🤗🤗

My cousin had one implanted when he was 40yo. He's close to 70yo now. Has a GREAT job, wife and family. He gets it maintained regularly. Kinda like a spring car tune up. His battery lasts I think 2 to 5 years! Your brother will likely be fine if he doesn’t have any other issues.

I don’t have experience with it. But be thankful. This could have turned out much worst than it did. Best of luck to you and your family.

I'm going to ask my ex... she is a nurse practitioner and spent many years in a cardiac ICU. I'll let you know what she says.

It’s so hard to know what to do. Great that he has no blockages.

I have been dealing with arrhythmia too, racing heart beat. My grandpa had an ICD and it worked well for him.

I hope everything goes well for him 🩷.
