A Rudderless Boat

I am but like a rudderless boat circling the waters in the sea of life
from the beginning when just a babe
loved they told me
but why no direction did they show me

was told right from wrong
how to act respectfully
that I needed to keep pace
with the ways of the world

with a once in awhile
mere friend they’d only be
never to confide in
or have them truly love me

told why the many things of life
school or a job
and why I needed to take a wife

but never were reasons given
the whys and the why not
the how’s and the how not

was set adrift in the seas of loneliness
lost in mounds of ever widening despair
I’d plead to them and often ask why
the only direction they never did give
was how to navigate in my rudderless boat
