Three steps forwards, two steps back, but one step ahead
Insurance is important. But what is more important is understanding the fine print. If you've been following my fiancé and I's journey after Hurricane Ian, today is a bit of good news. This past Tuesday I finally get a call from my insurance agent, and we finally have our pre-paid debit cards that we were supposed to get right after the storm. We didn't get them because they ran out due to all of the claims.
Fun fact, we have to provide an itemized list of all of our belongs we want to claim. Thankfully my fiancé and I took a couple of videos around our apartment in the days leading up to us leaving before the storm hit. Having all of this is helped us make this list. The claims specialist said she would help with the list if I would send her the video's, but with her track record of taking weeks to ever get back to me, I told her I'd do it myself.
Also, fun little fact I have to note when the claimed items were purchased because we are not getting a check for the full amount to replace the item, the insurance company will "take into account the depreciated value." So my air-fryer we bought a year ago for $100 ($99 plus tax) we wont get $100 for, instead we will get around $65-$75 to replace it, even with what inflation has done to the cost of EVERYTHING!
I completed the list today, and should hear back before Wednesday (she said). If our claim is "approved" we should get out check soon after. But the way she was talking, I'm not very hopeful that this process will finish out smoothly. Maybe it was just Friday and she's tied of dealing with people like me, but honestly this is her job, this is what she's supposed to do, but I did not get a good feeling talking to her that everything would be approved.
I am not going to name the insurance company, or my claims "specialist" that is "helping" us, shaming them here won't do any good, any soon enough the company will have all the bad publicity it can handle when the local news stations get done with them.
We are staying with my future in-laws through Thanksgiving, but the plan is to try and find a new apartment/house to rent as close to December 1st as we can. I had sold my house when we moved to Florida, and we had used the money to pay for parts of the wedding, pay off some debt, and to just have some money in savings. That money we saved is really coming in handy now as we replenish what we need to continue living.
Tonight is date night. Soon after I post this, I am getting all dolled up, and we are going out. Dinner, comedy club, and drinks after. I can't wait to have a "normal" night again with the man I love.
