The "rock in the pond" analogy

You stand at a pool of water's edge and decide to pick up a rock and throw it into the pond.

You are startled and upset to see that after throwing the rock in, you get splashed and all these ripples come out from the spot where you threw the rock and get your shoes wet.

Do you get upset because you got splashed and wet?

Or do you realize that the only control you have over this situation is to not throw the rock in the first place?
