I Have Something to Say

Mexican Holidays

Today is Independence Day. Flags are so thick in my town they almost blot out the sky. Patriotic music pours from every doorway. Traditional clothing from days gone by is pulled from musty trunks to see yet another parade and the aroma of guisados and goat roasting over charcoal is thick. Rising above everything is the sound of laughter and friends greeting each other. And always the grito: Viva Mexico! Viva la Revoluci贸n! Vive la Independencia!

I am so sad to miss it this year!

Really?馃 I thought that was Cinco De Mayo? Where I live it's mostly Hispanics and I don't see anything in town.

@Peaches Cinco de Mayo iactually receives little attention in Mexico. It commemorates an unexpected but important victory against the French in the city of Puebla in 1862.

16 de septiembre is the anniversary of the call to Independence of Mexico from New Spain in 1810. It is the Mexican version of US 4th of July

Mexican history is not always straight forward, but always interesting.

Viva M茅xico!

@Peaches you are very welcome. I've had the joy of living in Mexico off and on for 15 years and believe me, I've made plenty of blunders. Actually, I may have contributed to your confusion by not clearly stating in my original post that the town I was referring to is my residence in Mexico.
