If a guy/girl is insecure about themselves, do you feel sorry for him/her? Would you still date him/her?

I think that being in that type of relationship is like having a child, you have you display a healthy level of tough love when they become needy, set and enforce boundaries but not withhold love. That's tiring... it takes a while to fall for someone to even consider doing these things, they just feel like a burden...But I'm not sure if this applies if the person wasn't insecure until they started dating someone?
