It is not that complicated if people had read everything that they put out. There is a lot of work running a site like that. Their revenue stream was only some cheap ads put into the feed. Since the beginning the site was bases off a very successful anonymous section of a help site for an illness. What made the original site such a success was complete anonymity allowing for people to really let it all out about their experience which helped others with the same experiences. As a site gets popular you have all kinds of intrusions from government for your data. They could not continue to meet the demands of various government and semi government agencies properly vetting them to make sure their request were real and within the law and at the same time live up to their promise of privacy for EP s users. Of course there were also bad actors disrupting things but that is not why they closed.
