would someone in the new york/new jersey area explain something to me

if new jersey is a state completely separate from new york, why do they call them the new york giants and new york jets when they play in east rutherford nj..... this bugs the eff out of me somehow 🤣

The Giants used to share their stadium with the Yankees but they wanted a separate one. The land is very expensive in New York so they built in New Jersey. When the lease for the Jets was due they decided to go to New Jersey as well.

Because both teams originally came from NYC and I guess that's where they are incorporated or registered with the NFL. Plus the NFL thinks saying they're NY teams makes them more important, somehow. The only real NY NFL team is the Buffalo Bills.
