Judicial corporal punishment to replace lengthly incarceration. 30 or 60 days incarceration plus a caning, like in Singapore and a few other places, would serve as better incentive than what we have now. Especially if both are doubled for second offenses.

@Heartlander i'm not entirely sure but i mean it would be effective to some. i feel more like a eye for an eye thing, you'll be beb eaten if you are jailed for beating someone
@popmol I understand what you are saying. But also, the intent of judicial punishment is to rehabilitate, I don't think our current system does that except when the punished person decides to take advantage of the rehabilitation provided.
Remember when that US kid was arrested in Singapore some years back. If my memory serves me he was arrested and convicted of stealing street sign, and his punishment was like 30 days in jail and a caning of 6 very painful smacks on the back end. Sounded like a good reason why it's unlikely that he'd steal another street sign.
I'm personally opposed to capital punishment, but also have issues with our prison systems.

@Heartlander well from what i know of the american prison system its similar to the one in europe where its meant as "rehabilitation" but not actually practised, pretty much slave camps in some places, and people get send for the smallest offenses, like possession of weed will get you send to prison in some cases, like if it was a super awful drug sure but weed?
i heard theres a whole system for those in power to get money from it.

@Heartlander The kid vandalized luxury cars, the American community went apeshit, got it reduced to four whacks

@Heartlander I remember it like it was yesterday, the news never mentioned any street sign, focusing on the cars.
@NativePortlander1970 I kind of remember both the autos and the street signs. The autos were pretty vandalized. And yes, the US firestorm ran for weeks. I also believe that he was bart of a misbehaving gang of kids. He pleaded guilty expecting not to face the caning but it didn't work out that way. Another kid that pleaded not guilty and forced to trial ended up with a harsher punishment.
Backtracking a bit in his case, to read what he did with his life afterwards suggest that it didn't serve to rehabilitate him.
