in olden times did tuberculosis leave you confined to bed for a long time

just watching an old interview with Richard harris in 1973 on youtube and he said a long time ago in Ireland, he contracted TB and was confined to bed for 3 years, where he used the time to study Shakespeare.

Yes, bed rest was the prescription back then..for many months, even years.
