As an electrician, I am very ocd about centering things. I joke with customers that all of my cover plate screws have to be vertical so the electrons can flow freely.
Now in the defense of the electricians not centering the light. The gang box for the light has to be attached to rafter, when are generally 16-24 inches on center, depending on the building code. The rafters may not have aligned to the center of the room in question.
