Has anyone had to pay for going over the luggage weight limwhen flying domestic or international?

Once upon a time I went on a trip to Hawaii with my best friend and my then boyfriend joined for part of the trip. I had bought a lot of souvenirs for friends and family and was positive my checked bag would be over so I added a bunch of stuff to my boyfriend's checked bag when he flew home before me. I'm not sure I even told him. Needless to say, he was over. Oh boy was he pissed. Thankfully he was able to fit enough into his carry on to avoid a fee but damn did I deservedly hear about that hassle when I got home.
