When traveling without reservations, we occasionally ended up at old motels with rusty bathroom fixtures and no hot water. That I don't mind so much...

The worst experiences I've had were at motels, hotels and inns where the other guests were partying until dawn -- people running up and down the hallways past our room, drunk and screaming. No sleep and you can't get your money back when you check out.

@SW-User Been there played that game. That actually happened the last time we stayed in a hotel. They were booked so we couldn't even move to a different room. Fortunately that all ended when we bought the motorhome. No more dirty filthy gas station bathrooms either.

@Musicman Right, sometimes you can't just change rooms... One time, we were staying at a motel way out in the woods, where all the rooms were booked -- and the guy in the room next to us decided to kill his wife by throwing all the furniture at her (or at least that's what it sounded like). The creepy motel owner at the front desk was no help, so we checked out at 1:30 a.m. We didn't find another motel with a vacancy until 3:00 a.m. I actually have a lot of motel, hotel, inn horror stories from all over the country. 🤐

@SW-User With hotels you just never know what you are going to get. ☹️

@Musicman Too true... especially when traveling impulsively as we used to do with no reservations. So many adventures...

@SW-User This is what no reservations looks like for us these days. Can't find a campground stay in a Sam's Club parking lot for free for the night. Run a load of laundry and watch a movie.

@Musicman There was a time when the ex and I got talking about retirement, and we actually thought of just living in an RV. The idea of traveling forever really appealed to me. I must have gypsy ancestors. 😄

@SW-User Have you completely given up or is the idea still in your hopper?
SW-User
@Musicman I don't think I could handle driving and parking an RV.... However, I haven't given up on the idea of travel by car. ATM, I'm tied down by 2 houses and associated death related MESS. Maybe next year, if I survive this.

@SW-User Wishing you all the best. 🤗 Trust me, it is far easier than you think. How close are you to Florida? There is a RV dealership in Tampa called LazyDays. They give free driving lessons plus when you pick your RV up they have a delivery lot you stay in for a week. They spend an entire day teaching you how to use your RV. Plus if you have any problems they fix them while you are there. The whole process really puts you at ease. Go to YouTube and Google LazyDays in Tampa. They have a short 4 minute video on the place.

@Musicman Nowhere near FL but I'll look at it anyway for fun. I don't think I've seen an RV dealership anywhere near me for 20 years...

@SW-User Oh wow! That's terrible! Definitely watch the video. It is a fun 4 minutes. Well, maybe 6 minutes.
