From what I gathered, it's a congenital neurodevelopmental disorder which causes reduced secretion of epinephrine and cortisol. That leads to hypoactive amygdala that is responsible for processing and regulating emotions. The result is that the individual has a low tendency to be anxious and feel fear and also lacks ability to recognize fear in faces of others, which normal individuals recognize as a signal that a person does not pose a threat to them. Since this mechanism doesn't function in psychopaths they are more likely to attack others and disrespect authorities already in early childhood. Due to hypoactive amygdala, they have probably better control over frontal lobes, which are responsible for thinking, reasoning, decision-making, and planning, therefore many of them become very intelligent. Devoid of emotions and using cold logic to their own profit. At least that's how it sounds from these researches I read.
