The other day Megyn Kelly (CNN) interviewed Donald Trump. In the course of the interview, Donald Trump commented on his past business practices as "I was just trying to survive." Is it reasonable that, a billionaire can be "just trying to survive"?

Sure. Billionaires and millionaires do not have nowhere near that much cash. That money is on paper only. Stocks, bonds, real estate, art, etc.
All of those things can depreciate in value in a heartbeat.
