I Have a Question

Are you pro or anti GMO? Why?
I used to think GMO was great. As I became very expert in nutrition I started to understand that it is actually very dangerous. The problem is that by skipping over - or introducing new - gene sequences we are both enabling bad things and disabling good things that can have extremely unintended consequences.

We know by virtue of a long history between humans and particular plant species which are safe and which are dangerous. If we genetically modify those, we lose that safety record. We then distribute an apple that looks like an apple, but actually has new genetic sequences that may have totally unpredictable side effects, and those might not show up directly. If a given gene sequence increases your risk of some cancer type by 2%, no one will detect that.

That's a really interesting explanation, Pone. Those who want to read up on this issue might start with a search for "gmo effects on reproduction". There is a lot of material online now that seriously raises eyebrows.

@So, GMO may curtail reproduction in humans??

Good! Something needs to be done to control population increase, and apparently the 'rhythm method' isn't working...

Against. The consequences of genetical modification on food are not totally known yet. I don't want to risk cancer esting Monsanto crap

Bigbear, may I suggest that you read up on some more research about GMO, particularly about animals that cannot reproduce in the second generation.

I am still not really seeing an issue... lol

The planet would be far better off without us. Might be able to get a seat on the bus too...

Quizling, you know how mathematical curves can accelerate either up or down. GMO may well be capable of starting a downward accelerating curve, and a few generations from now, humans will no longer be able to reproduce. End of story. I am not saying that this is definitely the case for GMO, but apparently, there is a strong possibility that needs to be examined closely. It really is not all that funny.

Haha, comment on point @Quizling :-D

Actually the only genetic modifications they do on food is to make it hardier. Which is is actually better for us. Because it doesn't die as easily and it fills more bellies because it brings in a larger crop.

Im not informed enough on that topic to have a valid position. Based on my limited knowledge I would say pro though because thats how it is not and I dont see the problem.

Uh what are these options?
