Marriage is a lifetime commitment. You are not just legally commiting to a person but also commiting to them emotionally and physically. You become someone's person and your spouse becomes your person. All your other relationships rolled into this one person - friend, cheerleader, teacher, guide and companion. You're with them every step of the way. Making it legal, in my opinion, is showing respect to the relationship you have with your significant other.
