I Have a Question

I am a Veterinarian and I recently purchased a small animal hospital. As I am learning about managing the business, one thing I am looking to do is figure out ways to increase business. One thing I notice is that a lot of people have cats that they never even mention. So many times I have a client that I have seen forever, and then one day they bring in an old cat that is sick, and we have no idea that they even had a cat!

So, my question is this. What are some things your Veterinarian could do that would encourage you to bring in your pets, especially bring in your cat? Certain incentives maybe? Discounts?

Overall, Cats seem to sometimes be forgotten a bit, and are so prone to kidney disease that research shows monitoring for kidney disease as early as 6-8 years old is cats is needed.

Maybe a discount. I don’t know. I brought my cat in and I felt like because it was a cat it wasn’t that important and it cost $265 for a poopie test and enema and parasite test. First cat ever. I don’t know what’s normal. Also had questions because she was feral and they thought I was a stupid cat lady. Went to another vet for another problem a year later and fecal test was negative so asked for vet to call me. I’m still waiting 3 weeks later. I don’t think cats are the priority. Anyway...congrats on your business! I wish you many successful years ahead! 🙂

@Keepitsimple I guess it is hard to say what is normal for prices depending on the demographics in the area. For a feral cat that was constipated, I assume they needed to sedate, so somewhere in the $200 range would be what we would probably charge as well. If they would have given you a discount because it was your first cat, do you think you would have gone back to them instead of somewhere else next time around? And thank you for the well wishes!

No, they didn’t sedate her and maybe it is normal prices, I don’t know. I just wish they would have spent more time explaining cats and issues she had from being feral. Don’t get me wrong, I know time is money. I’m glad I have her. @BeardedDoc

@Keepitsimple That does seem like a high price then. And understood, seems like good communication and understanding is the more important aspect of the visit.

@BeardedDoc I think so. Like here’s what’s normal, here’s what to expect. Talk about diet and behavior.

PS..You can’t discount everybody, you need to make payroll and pay for the office. Lol
