The team is indeed aware of EP, and its closure was the reason they started working on SW. They were not part of the EP team though and have no affiliation with them. They were able to import the groups because those were publicly listed on EP, but they have no access to EP's databases as far as I know.
@sassygirl15: EP did offer their members to sign up for notifications about a possible restart, but SW is not that. If and when EP restarts is still unknown, but with the success of SW I don't think EP will even attempt a reopening.
