How do you decide what you care about when it comes to interacting with others?

You see I am a bit of a people pleaser and I'm not sure what things I can stop caring about when it involves others. I don't mean I want to stop caring about people altogether either, I just mean are there rules or something to help alleviate some unnecessary stress?
