As a former pathological liar, I may be able to give some insight. People lie for many various reasons such as insecurity, to avoid trouble or just the sheer thrill of manipulating another person, just to name some of the more common ones.
For me, my lying issues came from seeing myself as a person who was not interesting or worth talking to, so in my years from 8-21, I lied about so many things, small to large. It took a long time for me to work past that and become a person that was worth conversation and worth more than the bs I would lie about.
Long story short - people can be shit, and honesty really is the policy, as the saying goes.
