…that it’s appropriate, and even plausible, to promise someone you love that you’ll never hurt them? Don’t we, as humans, just naturally hurt those we love???

It happens, but often not purposefully.
Sometimes, when people are locked and loaded, ready to be hurt - it's unavoidable.
