Bad news first. Being told the good news afterward might blunt the impact of the bad news.

@JamesBugman I'm afraid your example doesn't make a lot of sense. Has anyone ever been told they're being fired, but also getting a pay raise? You either get fired or you get a pay raise. I've never heard of both things happening at the same time.
@Rutterman Yes, maybe that was a bad example, how about You have 2 months to live, your Gonorrhea is cured.

@JamesBugman That's a better example. It's hard to imagine any piece of good news that would offset the bad news that you're going to die soon.
