Hmm I sail and have done it for fifty years... Lightning strikes are something I am VERY much aware of and I do my utmost to avoid electrical storms as being on the water in one is frightening and dangerous and over the years I have witnessed sailboats getting hit by lightning.. I have so far avoided being struck and kept my boat from being struck... . I would not say your fear is irrational - but in general terms there are things you can do to minimize the chances...
