What's the main source of heat in your home? [I Ask]

I so wish I had a fireplace, but that's kind of too late.

We've lived in the home were in in now the last 2 years and it has a gas furnace.
Before we lived here we had a home that was heated only by fireplace. It was work. We had agreements with land owners to thin their forested property. My husband would, fall, buck, and chop the trees into firewood. We had enough firewood for our own home and to sell cords at a time to others. Our wood was always clean but bringing firewood into a house for heating always makes a huge mess.
@morrgin YES. A mess & a lot of work. And fireplaces are incredibly inefficient, though various wood-burning stoves (incl. those using pellets, etc.) are much better.

If you pay yourself nothing for all the work, then you can convince yourself that it makes sense...

@SomeMichGuy I look at it as my gym membership. 🤣
@WindTherapy My dad looked at it as nostalgia...& trying to give me some of the same sort of experiences he had while growing up in Michigan's "Upper [Northern] Peninsula".

That's when I looked at the time, the money for gas & oil for the chainsaw, gas for the truck, servicing for the chainsaw...and showed him that the "savings" over paying a higher heating bill was illusory.

The much higher efficiency wood or pellet stoves of today are a much better idea. The pellet ones have corkscrew feeds which keep going (modulo power, which is required for the airflow for very complete combustion, anyway) all the time. So if you had a stable on-site power, you could have heat regardless of the grid, and you can cook on the top of these, as well (prob. want to use a griddle, etc., but you can cook on them).

@SomeMichGuy You are exactly right. There is a lot of work, wear and tear on equipment and such in cutting wood. For me, as I said, I enjoy the work, and it keeps me active. I also live on a property with trees. Before I had the wood stove I was still cutting trees and burning brush after storm cleanup etc. So I decided since I had to do the work anyway I might as well put the effort to better use.
@WindTherapy Now THAT makes a ton of sense! Going to do it ANYWAY? Why *not* LEVERAGE your work? Great idea! Kudos. 😊👍

@WindTherapy I said the same thing when I was unloading trucks at Walmart 😉
@morrgin LMAO Good! You have a great face (profile pic), btw. You should be talking w/customers, not hidden away on a loading dock...er...UNloading dock. Of course, a bit of your face would be obscured at this point. lol

@SomeMichGuy after the truck is unloaded it all has to go on the shelves which means talking with customers😉
@morrgin 😊 Good! So you do ALL of it, unloading/checking it in, stocking & talking with customers. Those lucky bastards! 😉
