It's very similar to bi-sexual. Bisexuality basically only acknowledges two genders - male and female - and a bi-sexual person can be attracted to either. Pansexuality acknowledges that gender is more of a "spectrum" than a binary switch - male, female, androgynous, trans, etc - and a pansexual person can be attracted to many different people along many different points of the sexuality spectrum.
