They MIGHT be feral cats. But even feral cats will hang around homes if their residents feed them.

@4meAndyou estimates are between 70 and 100 million feral cats in the USA. they are in every town, city, borough and village here. whether people realize it or not they are in every neighborhood here. if one practices TNR it prevents more being born and keeps other ferals out. more and more towns are realizing this and easing their restrictions on providing for these creatures

@saragoodtimes AND even if the person feeding them is on food stamps and has no money, there are places that will do it for free!
I actually have a friend of a friend with a chicken farm, and HE feeds the feral cats around his house. I don't think you could call HIS cats feral anymore because they've gotten so tame...more like barn cats.
I looked up all that "spay and neuter free for feral cats" for him and sent him the information. Now the ball is in his court.

@4meAndyou here we have 2 foundations, No Nonsense Neutering and the Fairchild Foundation which provide low cost spay and neuter programs and the Fairchild Foundation also provides food through Walmart for low income people who sponsor a colony. we donate to the local ARL since they became a no kill shelter and have provided them in our wills to continue their work

I trap, neuter and return. have a warm area and feed them. they didn't ask to be feral so the best anyone can do is not harm them. even though they don't get close enough to pet or be taken in, they do appreciate that someone is kind enough to help them

I trap them and remove them before they destroy the ecosystem. In my area, feral cats have desimated the local bird population. No one feeds the birds any more because bird feeders become a killing ground for feral cats. Do you hate birds in the natural environment?
They destroy property and have torn screeens in my porch, crap on my lawn furniture, and are an absolute menace. They interbreed and become dangerous. They are definately an invasive species destroying the natural order. You might think you're doing the "right thing", but you are NOT.

I know it can be heartbreaking but you're not doing them a favor. They need to keep up their hunting skills and establish and know their territories.

You're a sweet guy.
That's very kind of you

@chernobylplaygr0unds I'm an animal person. Strongly believe they're better than people. Been vegetarian for well over 20 years probably closer to 30 nowadays

Now you will attract racoons. 🦝
😁

@JoyfulSilence trash pandas
@JoyfulSilence Here it would be rats, mice, raccoons, skunks, possums and maybe the odd well fed cat, and all of that would bring in the coyotes, the cougars and the bears.

At least you care enough to feed them. Good job! 😊
