Paramount Pictures traded Robert De Niro to MGM for Al Pacino in a manner similar to a baseball trade. Paramount wanted Pacino to star in “The Godfather” but he was under contract to star in MGM’s “The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight”. The only way MGM would release Pacino was if Paramount would send them De Niro who was under contract at Paramount. If that trade doesn’t happen, Pacino never gets his breakthrough role and might have never had the career he ended up with.
