@Mamapolo2016 In Manhattan it's short for 'South of Houston st.' Like Tribeca is short for 'Triangle Below Canal.' There is a Noho neighborhood too, North of Houston. DUMBO 'Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass' is a pretty small neighborhood.

BTW, New Yorkers pronounce Houston as "House-ton" not "Hyoos-ton."
