I went through the same thing when I hit my late twenties.

I finally figured out how to shake off that feeling.

Yes, I felt old at age 26, 27, etc....because I had gotten so used to a certain self-image that was formed in high school and college. Compared to THAT, I was old.

One day, I was looking in the mirror, aware of how I no longer looked "youngish" the way I had, when suddenly it hit me: in a few years I would be 30. And I thought about people in their 30's and imagined myself as one of them. Suddenly, I felt like a "young 30" instead of an "old 20." I simply had to let go of the stage of life I was exiting and embrace the next stage.

And I have gone through the same process when turning 40, 50, 60, and (just two weeks ago) 70.

@DrWatson I totally now how you feel. I think 26 -27 is the age where I felt I really have to get my shit together; I was out-growing my persona until that point. My friends were beginning to get married and settle down and become real adults.

I feel 26 is a real cross roads in people's lives; notice that all the young musicians who died early where 26. I think it's a move on stage.

Once you get over it though, it becomes ancient history and you 26 year old crisis is totally forgotten and you move on to a better self.

@JimboSaturn That's a good way to put it.

@DrWatson I've been through the same thing. I've always looked at people in their thirties as old, until I hit that age, and to me it felt like a "young 30".
