2005 - 2021
16 years old my film collection got to be. It was looking like it would explode into a whole new realm with 4k and all. I was pumped for that, but beneath the surface i had had enough of having to have the right equipment to enjoy it all. With books, like real physical copies of books all you need is a light source and a brain, when you read it strengthens that muscle between your ears. This is however my eulogy for my film collection and by extension all the tv shows i'd gotten too.
In 2004 i retired from working, a little before that i got my first dvd and dvd player, it blew me away this technology that was about 7 years old at the time.
The 1st dvd i had was Volumen a collection of Bjork music videos .... i still love her!!
In 2004 i rented movies and quickly wanted movies that could be more like art. With Herzog began the cult of the director. The following years were focused on these auteurs of the moving image until Barnabus Collins and Doctor Who came along to disrupt the filmic aspect of collecting. With Who i felt like a kid i never was before, it was thrilling.
I won't go into much further detail, but to say that collecting films was the defining thing for me, they taught and showed me a larger world than i did have before, well duh, how could they not??!! smh
In 2020 a stunning new development, with the belated inclusion of Blu-ray, clearer picture, niftier menu designs and all, i was smitten, but less than a year later i was all a buzz for another major development, and i just felt deep within tired, and through a dozen or so factors, from a
a) sadness for not finishing many a book
b) what books can do, how much more a book gives than a film
and
c) books are immediate .... it's settled i thought.
Now i look at my film collection, scattered around, most of the blu-rays are on the main level, some real treasures, for about 5 years those will be what i dip into to watch with a little sense of nostalgia, if i'm allotted a longer time as a breathing human being, i would then go through the tv shows, and et cetera.
