scantily clad people and the aroma of sun tan oil? Not sure. I worked at a beach here in Maine during Summers for a long time. For me, what I loved was getting down early, buying a coffee and sitting out on a bench surf side before all the tourista's got up and out. That brief interlude of watching the sun creeping up off the horizon, and the sound of the surf is what was so hypnotizing for me. Not sure about others.

@Freeranger I love the run or walk on the beach and watch the sunrise. All the birds searching for food that has washed up overnight, and early rising people looking for that perfect shell. From first light until about 8:30 when the heat gets a bit much, then off for breakfast. In the evening after about 7 till dark thirty - feeling the breeze and hoping for a moonrise over the ocean.

@Jill1990 I could never not live near the sea. As it is, here in Maine, I live about 20 plus minutes away. I've swum in its ice cold currents until my lips were blue as a boy. The smell you mention....here, it's the smell of kelp washed up on the beach. It's like no other. Pungent...to the uninitiated...it "smells". For me, it's home.
There is a walkway that runs up over the hills opposite the beach....whenever we get an Atlantic storm in, I'm drawn to it. I have a particular bench I love to sit at and feel the power of the sea. It's nothing short of sensual and raw. Water the color of jade, and the spray lightly coats all who venture near. I'm so drawn to it.
