Quotes By the 39th President of the United States

“We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.”

“Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries.”

"The best way to enhance freedom in other lands is to demonstrate here that our democratic system is worthy of emulation."

“We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles.”

“A strong nation, like a strong person, can afford to be gentle, firm, thoughtful, and restrained. It can afford to extend a helping hand to others. It is a weak nation, like a weak person, that must behave with bluster and boasting and rashness and other signs of insecurity.”

“God always answers prayers. Sometimes it's 'yes'. Sometimes the answer is 'no'. Sometimes it's 'you gotta be kidding'."

Rest in Peace, Jimmy Carter (October 1, 1924 – December 29, 2024)

As critical as people were about him as president, I don’t think anyone can doubt what a good man he was, and that his heart was always in the right place.

I remember feeling sad that with all of his later health issues he had to suffer the loss of Rosalynn going first. I like to think they’re together again.

@bijouxbroussard Considering the candidates elected by the demographic that was/is critical about his presidency, I suspect it's exactly the fact that he was a good man that annoys them
@bijouxbroussard and there's nothing rarer in politics than a good man
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard I agree. No one can honestly deny that he was a good, decent man.

Yes, I'd also like to believe he and Rosalynn are together again. They loved each other so deeply.

He was a glass half-full kinda guy.

A good heart - and I wish the world were as good as he thought it could be.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Pretzel I feel the same way.

Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Justmeraeagain He truly was.🙏
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
Definitely NOT like Trump.

Sigh
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@JoyfulSilence Definitely not. The two men couldn't be more different.

That last quote is one of my favorites, and I use it occasionally in a class I teach. I have several of his books in my library and read them for inspiration occasionally.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@exexec I love that quote. I have to confess I've never read any of his books, but I understand he was a good writer.
exexec · 61-69, C
@Rutterman He was a good writer. Some of his writings will probably resurface with his death.

There has liveth a good man
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@val70 Yes. He lived his values and really, truly cared about people.

Inspiring life. RIP 🙏🏻
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@HannahSky Absolutely. A life well-lived.
Interesting that that mosaic quote is how Canadians have distinguished ourselves from the American melting pot.

How we don't expect Immigrants to check their culture at the door (even though WASPs were not expected to).
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I share the Canadian (and Carter's) view of immigrants and the way they enrich life in their adopted country.
