Guess when the NRA agreed with our governor about gun control being necessary ? In 1968.
The governor was Ronald Reagan, in response to the Black Panthers deciding that the 2nd Amendment applied to them, too.
@bijouxbroussard gun control was wrong then, still wrong.
@MayorOfCrushtown Some gun control makes sense. Not arming someone with a recorded history of violent criminal activity, domestic abuse or suicide attempts could have saved lives.

Restricting access based on race, yeah, a bit different. Incidentally, even in "open carry” states, guess who the police are statistically more likely to stop for exercising that right ? Philando Castile had a legal right to carry a gun, and even let the police know he was in possession of a legal gun when was pulled over for a traffic stop.

Didn’t stop an officer from killing him anyway, claiming he "felt unsafe”. Castille was a respected supervisor at a public school, had his girlfriend and child in the car.
@bijouxbroussard legal or not, if I’m in a rough part of town, I’m packing and if they need to lock me up, that’s fine. I know how to survive in prison. A dead man can’t debate about gun laws.
@MayorOfCrushtown I get it. But it’s also less likely that the police will kill you before you even make it to lockup.

Huey Newton was arming the Panthers for protection, because they were having problems with the Oakland PD harassing them basically just for existing. Even when they weren’t breaking any laws they were subject to arrest.

When I was in high school a bunch of us used to go participate in their food drives. Even on our own time, our school objected, but compromised by requesting we not wear our uniforms while volunteering for the Panthers.

The original Black Panthers were folk heroes to many people. They weren’t separatists like NOI, and several whites could be seen working with them on projects like the food bank.
@MayorOfCrushtown I think there's a middle path here. Gun control doesn't have to mean banning all guns; it can mean licensing and training and registering, just like with drivers' licenses.

Did you know there's a federal law against creating an electronic database for gun ownership? Every time a weapon is recovered from a mass shooting, an army of people have to dig thru little slips of paper to see where and when the gun was sold. Isn't that absurd??

@bijouxbroussard It's all fun and games until people of non-European origin start getting armed and organized. Or anyone slightly more left than center-right. Or anyone protecting their nation from being molested by Uncle Sam.

Even when you do it peacefully, they sanction you.

Thank God some nations are rising up against Washington's hegemony.
