SW Dare Saturday

I dare you to post about a woman in your life or in history whom you found to be impactful.

The lady I am choosing today is my aunt. I was told last night that she is going into in-home hospice care, and that is fine. She is an old lady who has had a great life and feels ready to pass on. She was loved by her family and lived a lot of life, seeing a lot of history unfold. She was born during the Great Depression era and always had the best attitude that could never be brought down.

I suppose why I find her to be so special is because of how she treated me. I often came from a family that would only make small talk with me and not much else. It was more like, "You are seen but not heard," and that really had a special way of making me feel not very special. My siblings were 20 to 30 years older than me, and the few times we saw each other, those were the only words spoken: How are you? How is school? How is your mom? Etc. That was it.

But my aunt was the coolest lady around. She was quick-witted, always up for a laugh, and you couldn't hurt her feelings. She loved me no matter what, and she wanted to know a lot more than how the weather was, how school was, and whatever else. She was the type of lady who would go up to bat for you. The type who, if someone was abusive to her family, that someone might just silently disappear in the night. The type who didn't care if you had a drug or alcohol addiction or made bad choices in your youth. She was there to get you the help you needed.

So I respect her, think a lot of her, and I will miss her.

I hope everyone here can do this dare and find a woman to build up today and give her a tribute about why she is great.

My late ex-mother-in-law, Eleanor.

She is gone now. When she was 16, married and pregnant, her husband for mere months was killed in a mining accident. She went into early labor and her premature son was born with cystic fibrosis. His “crib” was a shoebox because he was so tiny.

Eleanor was, in the most honorable sense of the word, a caregiver. When my ex-husband’s mother was committed to a mental hospital, my late father-in-law hired Eleanor as live-in caregiver for him and his three young children.

Allow me to say that caring for THAT family was combat duty.

I don’t know at what point the employment changed to a relationship with my ex-father-in-law. They stayed together for decades and the only thing I ever heard her say in terms of “something for herself,” was that she wanted them to be married. He withheld it until she was SIXTY-FIVE.

In the meantime, she raised the daughter they shared and cared for her son. At the time he was born, doctors told her his life expectancy was about to the age of 21. He lived to the age of 44, because of Eleanor. It was Eleanor who thumped his back with her tiny fists several times a day to loosen the phlegm in his lungs, Eleanor who watched his diet, Eleanor who left him no doubt he was deeply loved. Eleanor cooked massive family meals because his decree was that holidays happened at HIS house regardless of how exhausted she was.

She welcomed daughters-in-law and sons-in-law with open arms.

She showed me what a Christian was by acting like one.

RIP, dear Eleanor. I pray you are finally resting in peace.
@Mamapolo2016 You know she was strong in all the ways that mattered. I could tell that from reading your story.
@DeadOrbit Yes. She was treated like the floor. Stupid people don’t know the floor is what holds everything up.
@Mamapolo2016 Seems like she found someone to love and respect her at least
