If someone calls you ma'am, is it a respect thing or are they saying you're old?

I only get called M’am when i go to the USA. I cringe when I hear it. Makes me feel like they’re addresses as an old lady

@jackrabbit10 we were as well taught to be very polite here. Heck we are known for being over polite. We called them Mrs Smith and Mrs Smith (used Smith as an example surname), not M’am and I rarely heard anyone address someone as Sir
