If someone calls you ma'am, is it a respect thing or are they saying you're old?

I often refer to women in respect using ma’am - if its good enough to honour a Queen then you are all lovely and should all be honoured that way, I am also old, but did it when I was young as well.

I have told this story before. But many years ago at LAX a tall younger Texan who was double my wifes height became fascinated by her Scottish accent and loomed over her for over an hour "Ma'am"ing her half to death. It was hilarious to watch. I occasionally immitated it for a few weeks after we got back home. The bruises were worth it..😷
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@whowasthatmaskedman I guess it's a southern thing
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@MyNameIsHurl Wife and I were both big "Four weddings and a funeral" fans and I was reminded of this pairing, which was wedding three.https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109831/mediaviewer/rm1057858561/?ref_=ttch_ph_2

I'm going with respect

A lot of people, mostly the younger ones don't know the meanings to MRS. MISS. Or MS

And Ma'am is a safe way out
fun4us2b · M
Most stores the cashiers and such pretty much call everyone Ma'am and Sir....maybe training, or maybe just habit so they don't have to distinguish...
YoMomma ·
I remember when we first moved from the city to the country and my mom was all like “Daniel has a new friend and he called me mam!!” I didn't say anything but i thought “what’s that?”

😅😅
Degbeme · 70-79, M
I do it out of respect when I do and that isn`t very often, ma`am...
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@Degbeme 😄
goofypony · 31-35, F

Mudkip · 31-35, M

@Mudkip nice
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
I only get called M’am when i go to the USA. I cringe when I hear it. Makes me feel like they’re addresses as an old lady
@Jenny1234 most of the polite people live in southern U, S. states, we were thought as kids to be polite to everyone, young and old,
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@jackrabbit10 we were as well taught to be very polite here. Heck we are known for being over polite. We called them Mrs Smith and Mrs Smith (used Smith as an example surname), not M’am and I rarely heard anyone address someone as Sir

When I do it: respect or I am being facetious and messing with a friend. The friend knows the difference.
Livingwell · 61-69, M
I say that to young women as well.
swirlie · 31-35
@Livingwell
...to an 18 year old?
Livingwell · 61-69, M
@swirlie Respect has no age limits

MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@NudasPriest oh ok hahahaha
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@NudasPriest I meant you as in me but I guess I worded it all wrong
@MyNameIsHurl I make a game of taking things out of context etc.
Sign of respect
its the way you were raised up, yes mam, no sir
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@jackrabbit10 I like that
HootyTheNightOwl · 41-45

Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F

Turtlepower · 36-40, M

Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F

Turtlepower · 36-40, M
Pfuzylogic · M
It is both.
Was it a hot younger guy doing it? 👀
swirlie · 31-35
The problem is, in the USA nobody understands social protocol. In fact, Americans are totally ignorant of social protocol. Every female to an American is called ma'am at ANY age because Americans are not taught in primary school how to address women socially.

A young girl under the age of 18 is addressed as 'Miss'

A young un-married woman over the apparent age of 18 is addressed as 'Ms'

A younger to middle-aged married woman is addressed as Ma'am

ANY older woman who's beyond middle age is addressed as 'Madam'
