"Tom looked down at the body of the man. 'I’ll be all right. You go on now. I’ll be all right.'
'You get back,’ Casy said. 'You get back to where you come from.'
But Tom said, ‘I’ll be all right. You go on and get the folks. I’ll be all right.’
He didn’t look back as he walked away from the body, and he didn’t look back as he went out into the night, but he heard Casy cry. He heard the man’s voice. It was just a little, bitter scream in the night."
